John 1:1
:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14
John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

"The Word Was God"
The proper reference to the Creator of John 1:1 - 1:3 prior to His manifestation in the flesh, is the "Word". The Son of God is a title that is properly ascribed to the Man Jesus of Nazareth who was born of the virgin Mary. To inject the name "Jesus" into John 1:1 is error. Also, to inject the title of "Son of God" into John 1:1 is erroneous for the same reason. See 1st John 5:7 for reference support in this matter, as well as Revelation 19:13.

1st John 5:7
7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
Revelation 19:13
13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
